When choosing a cloud based server, you are essentially renting a virtual server instead of purchasing an actual physical computer. This is also known as Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS). IaaS is one of three ‘layers’ in the Cloud Computing model. The three fundamental layers or service models are:
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): Layer provides you with hardware and is managed for you by a service provider.
Platform as a Service (PaaS): Layer consists of hardware and operating system that is managed for you by the service provider.
Software as a Service (SaaS): This layer offers hardware, operating system, and application that is provided and managed for you by the service provider.
How it Works:
The Cloud: You are given access to virtual components to use for your IT platform. The components are located in a data center that provides redundant sources of electricity, Internet, hardware, and data replication.
Virtual Hardware: The data center provides you with virtual server space, network connections, Internet bandwidth, and firewall. A virtual private network is built between your business and virtual server to provide secure access.
Application: Your software is installed on the virtual server for use by your business. You typically own your application, although, some companies offer their application as SaaS.
